The Library
Click DLUC Library on LibraryThing to open the on-line Deer Lake library catalog (it will open in a separate browser window), or read on to learn more about our library and the on-line catalog.
The library at Deer Lake United Church contains over seven hundred books which provide a wealth of inspirational and informative reading. We have several translations of the Holy Bible, and numerous commentaries to accompany them, to help us better understand the Book at the centre of our faith. Where ever you currently are in your faith journey, there is a book available to help you better understand and live in accordance with God’s will for your life.
In addition there is a whole host of books that explore the multiple aspects of Christianity and life within a congregation. A juvenile section also exists for young readers. Our library is a public lending library, which means that anyone can benefit from the collection. Please invite your friends and family to explore and share in the library.
Library Organization
The library is organized by the Dewey decimal classification system, as most other libraries, and in the following sections: Reference, Non-fiction, Fiction, Biography, and Juvenile fiction, non-fiction, and picture books. There is also a limited selection of CD’s and DVD’s.
On-line Catalog
The books can be viewed on-line at LibraryThing.com by clicking on the link at the bottom of this page. Librarything is a library quality web-based cataloguing system. Once at the site, there is a “suggested style for viewing this library” and I recommended that you click the “use it” button near the top left side of the page. This will display the most pertinent book information on your screen.
Searching the Catalog
Doing basic searches is simple; just type what you’re looking for in the search box. Since the default on this search box is “All Fields” the system will do just that, search all of the catalog data for what you’re looking for. This is likely all you will need to know. When you find the book(s) that you are looking for just take note of the call number, or Dewey decimal number, and then pick the book(s) up the next time you are in the library.
If you want to get more specific with your searches you can click on the drop down menu box and search for any of the following data fields: title/author, Tags, Reviews, Comments, or Subject.
Sign Out Procedure
The sign out procedure has not changed. Simply fill out the card at the back of the book and leave it in the designated box in the library. Please take a return date reminder card with you. The loan period is four weeks.
Book Reviews
The catalog also includes book reviews and ratings both by the congregation and other LibraryThing members. If you look at the column on the far right you will see what is called “shared” with four symbols beneath it. The first two, a head and a data card, provide additional information on the particular book. By clicking on the data card you get further information such as the publisher, ISBN number, and tag. The tag field is a few words about the book and is similar to the subject field.
There are two numbers under the head symbol, the first tells you how many other LibraryThing members have the same book, and the second lets you know how many, if any, reviews there are on that book. Just click on the head to get this information.
Additional Information
The site has much more to offer and explore; the menu bar at the top of the page will guide you around the site which is largely self explanatory.
If anyone would like more detailed information there is an excellent PowerPoint presentation available that also describes and explains the many features. Please do not hesitate to contact Sue M about it at library@dluc.ca.
