Music

The Deer Lake music program revolves primarily around the choir, which varies from 12 to 24 members. However, since anyone who can carry a tune is welcome to join the choir, its numbers usually swell to 30 or more during Advent and Christmas. Until recently, we have been very fortunate at Deer Lake to have had three inspiring choir directors and a fabulous pianist/organist. This has lead to a geat deal of diversity in the music the choir sings.

From time to time, in addition to the choir, we enjoy music from small instrumental or vocal groups, our lively Kidz Band and the occasional children's choir. The small groups are usually members of the choir. The Kidz Band is made up of half a dozen or so youth enrolled in local music programmes, who have worked with Don Wade to hone their musical skills in a small group setting. They sure know how to swing!

We enjoy our music at Deer Lake and it's an important part of our Sunday services. It's not unusual to hear applause after a lively and uplifting anthem or postlude, but tears can also be seen after a particularly moving piece.

Due to the recent retirement of our choir directors, we are currently searching for a new director. In the meantime, the choir or small groups continue to sing most Sundays with the help of Donna "Magic Fingers" Phillips and ad-hoc leadership from members of the choir.

Rehearsals

The choir practices at 7:30 every Thursday evening from September to June. No experience is necessary, so if you enjoy singing (whether you can read music or not) why not try us out one Thursday? The choir is a wonderfully supportive, fun-loving group. Practices start with a warm-up and end shortly after 9:00 with the singing of The Blessing of Aaron.

Musical Events

Members of the choir, and occasionally special guests, perform in an annual musical event as a fund raiser. These events are open to the public and are always a lot of fun. Here are a few pictures from past events:

Lasagna e Musica:

A fun evening of food and entertainment with a decidedly Italian theme.

Sax Among Friends:

A broad selection of instrumental and vocal music featuring the saxophone.
